A Healing Herbal for Skin Wounds

Ashwagandha has a history in Ayurveda for its immune-boosting and wound-healing abilities. Traditionally ashwagandha’s fresh leaves were mashed and used topically to heal skin sores and reduce swelling.10

Modern research suggests there may be scientific validity to its use. In one animal study on a rat model of human diabetes, ashwagandha was administered both orally and topically to wounds to measure its effect on wound healing. Both forms of treatment showed significantly better healing times than those who were treated with placebo, with the oral form performing better than the topical treatment. The ashwagandha-treated group also showed significantly increased collagen production and higher levels of other markers for healing.75
